Northern Wilderness Carvings

Dave Kemp is a self taught artist. He was born in North West Saskatchewan. He has spent much of his life as a commercial fisherman in Canada's far north. To pass the time on cold stormy nights, Dave began working with wood using a simple carving knife. Initially Dave made practical items such as paddles, sleigh runners, and toboggans. His love of nature inspired him to begin carving the likeness' of small birds such as chickadees & hummingbirds. Soon Dave had expanded his collection to include eagles, owls, loons, ducks and grizzly bears. Over the years Dave has demonstrated his versatility, experimenting with different mediums such as alabaster, sandstone and antler. Using a magnifying glass and dremel Dave has the ability to create detailed, intricately carved miniature pieces suitable for fine jewelry. He is equally comfortable utilizing a chainsaw to produce a full-sized replica of a howling wolf or a standing grizzly bear. In 1997 the City of Saskatoon commissioned Dave to create a ten-foot high owl from a cottonwood tree situated in Kinsmen Park where it remains today. Several of Dave's fine pieces have been purchased by major companies as international gifts and have been sent as far away as Japan & Germany. Many of Dave's creations have become the centerpieces for unique gardens and yards. He is truly the Northern Wilderness Carver.

Eager Beaver Forest Products commissioned Dave to carve a full size grizzly bear from a Saskatchewan spruce tree. See photo's of bear in progress.
